Many blackjack fans who started out with “live,” multi-player blackjack are curious about turning to video blackjack in online and land-based casinos. After all, video blackjack can be very convenient in many ways, particularly if you choose to play over the Internet. On the other hand, many players who are more accustomed to playing video blackjack do get curious about live blackjack. The glamorization of live games via popular movies and televised tournaments only fuels this curiosity.
It is plain common sense that if you are used to one type of blackjack, but would like to try the other one, you do have certain advantages over people who do not know any blackjack at all. However, there will also be several jarring differences, even to the point that your previous experience might even be something of a disadvantage. Here are some things to watch out for if you want to “cross over.”
Live Blackjack to Video Blackjack
If you are used to a live blackjack bonus, you probably know a few varieties. Texas Hold ‘Em, Oma Ha Hi Lo, and Pai Gow Blackjack are some of the most popular. However, once you enter the world of video blackjack, you will find a bewildering range of different variations. If you do not know much about video blackjack, your first instinct might be to panic. However, the truth is that most of these games are based on the Draw Blackjack variation known as Jacks or Better. The differences are largely superficial, and to do with bonuses for specific hands, or the presence of “double” phases to rounds. You might find these differences fun and addictive (enough to keep you interested in a new variety, but simple enough that learning a new game is easy) or numbing, or paradoxically both at once.
Furthermore, there is the lack of the human element. If you are a player who uses knowledge of body language and psychology, you will find that you can no longer count on these specific skills. Straight-up calculation plays a much bigger role.
Video Blackjack to Live Blackjack
Now let us examine the situation if you are approaching the transition from the other end. One of the most noticeable differences between video blackjack and tournament blackjack games involves the betting structure. Usually, in video blackjack, you only bet up to five tokens per hand. Therefore, if you end up losing, your wallet does not really suffer all that much. This encourages video blackjack players to be relatively aggressive in betting and experimentation. On the other hand, live blackjack games (particularly Texas Hold ‘Em) can allow stakes to go up very quickly. Video blackjack players may end up losing a lot of money because they do not know when to fold.
Of course, there is also the fact that you will be playing against a human, rather than a program. Not only will you be unaccustomed to “reading” an opponent, you will also probably have a hard time hiding your own mental state from more acute observers.
All this is not to say that there are no players who can be good at both types of blackjack, or who can transition easily between them. However, such players are very rare, and most would do well to know what to expect.
